Often Jesus needed to pray alone for refreshing. Once, the Disciples were alone in a boat and a terrible storm came. They were afraid they would die. Jesus went out to them, walking on the water. The Disciples were terrified.
Jesus immediately said to them, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” (Mt 14:28 NIV)
Jesus replied, “Come.”
Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. He was so focused on Jesus that nothing else mattered. Then he noticed the wind blowing his hair and water crashing over his feet. He began to sink because he was more focused on his circumstances than on Jesus. As he sunk into the water, Peter knew Jesus alone could save him so he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus reached out and caught Peter. Jesus shook His head and asked, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
As they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Many times this is how we are with God. We are focused on Him and are courageous enough to try anything. Then distractions start to pop up or we experience storms and we get our eyes off of God. We turn to look at the wind and waves around us. Just as Jesus was right there to pick up a sinking Peter, He will always be there to pick us up when we call on Him. Today we can ask God for help and put our focus on Him. It’s never too late to ask for help.
